I’ve moved to Vancouver! 💜 SURPRISE!

The Vancouver Aquarium

I’m so excited to be here. There’s a whole city to explore, new communities to become part of, and so many people I haven’t met yet! I can’t wait to get involved in the local cybersecurity and software development communities, meet fellow founders as I start my new company, and even take some dance lessons. 💃🏻

And for everyone wondering what this means for #InfoSecGardening: do not worry. There will still be vegetables. There will still be flowers. I have a backyard and side yard that I fully intend to garden the crap out of, plus potential plans for a small greenhouse! The farm was more than I wanted to manage on my own, and I’m excited about a garden that fits this next chapter of my life.

While the gardening is quieter over winter, expect a few #TanyaExplores posts as I discover my new city. If I find something that surprises me, makes me laugh, or makes me stop and take a picture, I’ll share it with you. The first event I plan to explore in Vancouver will be Hack the Halls on November 26th, in case you want to meet me there. 🤗

If you’re in Vancouver or the surrounding area and would like to meet me for a coffee, beer, or a walk somewhere interesting, reply to this email! I’d love to get to know more people in my brand new city. 🌆 Have a favourite café, an interesting area to explore, or a community you think I’d enjoy? Tell me about it, or let’s make a plan to explore it together! Yes, I am literally offering to meet everyone in Vancouver. I told you I was an extravert!

Tanya’s Pick of the Month

The Vancouver Aquarium, Jellyfish Exhibit

🦈  The Big Shark Pledge  🦈

Yes, those are jellyfish in the photo, but my pick this month sharks. 💜

I signed the Big Shark Pledge, and I’d love for you to consider signing it too. I knew sharks were caught accidentally when people were fishing for something else and that it was a serious problem. It’s called bycatch. When I was at the aquarium this week they explained the scale, and it’s horrifying! Researchers estimated that fishing killed at least 80 million sharks worldwide in 2019.

The Shark Trust is asking for stronger protections for sharks in the open ocean. If that’s something you’d like to support, you can sign the Big Shark Pledge here.
